5·18 정신을 영원히 기억하기 위한 오늘의 투쟁 (2020년-40주년)

5·18민중항쟁의 대변인으로 전남도청을 사수하다 사살당한 노동운동가 윤상원과 야학동지였던 박기순의 영혼결혼식을 위해 만들어져 5.18의 상징이 된 노래 ‘임을 위한 행진곡’이다. 망월동 윤 열사 무덤 앞에서 노래를 부르고 있자니 눈물이 난다. 나는 기자로 5·18을 폭도에 의한 것으로 보도하라는 신군부에 저항해 제작거부를 하다 유학을 떠나야 했다. 귀국해 제일 먼저 달려간 곳이 5·18묘역이었고, 광주를 갈 때면 여기를 들린다. 내가 가는 묘역은 사람들이 으레 찾는 웅장한 5·18기념공원이 아니라 그 옆의 초라한 구 묘역이다. 항쟁 중엔 가족들이 훼손된 사체를 손수레에, 도청함락 후에는 청소차에 희생자들을 실어 와 묻은 ‘역사적 성지’다. 나에게 진짜 묘역은 이 옛 묘역이다.
