저는 초등학생때 선생님께서 화려한 휴가라는 영화를 보여주신 적이 있습니다.
그 전까지 글로는 수도 없이 봐온 5.18민주화 항쟁이였지만 그 때의 저에게는 그저 많은 역사 중 하나였고 크게 느끼지는 못했던 일이였습니다. 하지만 영화로, 시각과 청각으로 느낀 이 일은 그제서야 많은 역사 중 하나로 느껴지지 않았습니다. 그리고 저는 그 때야 그들에게 얼마나 감사해야하는지, 그 일을 왜 단순하게 여기면 안되는지를 알았고 그 후로도 학원 선생님, 친척들 등 많은 분들께 이야기를 들었습니다. 들을 때마다 저는 저의 무지를 알았고 절대로 잊어선 안되는 사건이라는 것도 계속해서 깨닳았습니다.나라는 광주 밖으로는 모두에게 폭동이라는 거짓말을 일삼았고, 그들은 폭동이라는 말을 들으면서도 계속 싸움을 이어갔습니다.하지만 이제 우리는 그 일은 절대 폭동이라 부를 수 없는 자유를 향한 투쟁이였다는 것을 알고 있습니다. 우리는 그들에게 감사하고 그들이 지키려 했던 것을 지키기 위해 계속해서 노력해야할 것입니다.
내가 여기에서 정치를 비판할 수 있는 것, 편히 누울 수 있는 것, 먹을 수 있는 것은 모두 그들 덕분이고 지금의 대한민국이 존재할 수 있었던 것 또한 모두 그들의 덕분입니다. 민주를 위해 싸워주셔서 감사합니다, 잊지 않겠습니다.
