5.18 민주화운동 관련 미측 기록물 추가 비밀해제

1. 외교부는 한미 양자정책대화(BPD, 6.29. 서울 개최) 계기에 미국 정부로부터 5.18 민주화운동 관련 비밀해제된 미측 문서 사본 21건을 전달 받았다. 

  ㅇ Mark Knapper 국무부 동아태부차관보가 고윤주 외교부 북미국장에게 전달

   ※ 외교부는 ▴작년 5월 5.18 민주화운동 40주년 계기 비밀해제된 미측 문서 43건과 ▴올해 5월말 14건을 전달 받은바 있으며, ▴이번에 추가로 21건을 전달 받은 것은 그간 미측과 다양한 소통 계기에 각급에서 긴밀하게 협의해온 결과임. 

2. 미측이 이번에 비밀해제하여 우리측에 전달한 문서는 「5.18민주화운동 진상규명을 위한 특별법」에 따라 금일 「5.18민주화운동 기록관」에 인계 후 기록관 웹사이트에 공개된다. 

3. 우리 정부는 미측이 코로나19로 인해 기록물 비밀해제 업무의 정상적인 진행이 크게 제약 받는 상황임에도 불구하고, 인권, 민주주의 등 핵심 가치를 공유하는 한미동맹의 정신을 바탕으로 추가적인 비밀해제를 위해 협력해 준 데 대해 평가하며, 앞으로도 5.18 민주화운동 관련 미측 문서의 추가적인 비밀해제가 이루어질 수 있도록 미측과 계속 협의해 나갈 예정이다.  끝.

누구 할 것 없이 때리고 진압하는 군인들의 모습을 보며 너무 두려웠을텐데 민주주의를 위해 나서셨다는게 본받아야할 정신이라고 생각합니다. 감사합니다. 그 분들이 아니었다면 우리는 지금 여전히 독재정권에 시달리고 있을지도 모릅니다.
